👋🏾 Hi, welcome to The Offhours Weekly, a share of illustrations, drawings, thoughts and links. Thanks for being here, you’re amazing, tell a friend.
Hello! Welcome new subscribers! I was sick last week, had to miss my first issue this year ~ sorry. When sickness collides with Dad life, something has to give. Anywho, this was the post I had in the works.
Baldwin the Great
A distinct cadence, a unique tone. James Baldwin was an incredible author, playwright, orator and icon. When I met my wife—which feels like eons ago now—she introduced me to his writing, and showed me his books when our personal libraries merged. I had seen a few videos of his debates, but had not dug much further.
She was so passionate as we spoke about him in our conversations, she decided to pull quotes for me to letter/draw, as a part of my daily drawing project. The quotes are still some of my favorite brush lettering samples in my portfolio. I learned so much about Baldwin engaging in the research and drawing what stood out to me, and eventually compiled the drawings into a neat little pocket sized zine.
Also, looks like the googles had him in mind to kick off Black History month as well with their Doodle by artist Jon Key, so not too shabby.
FYI - I have a new born 😊. Future posts will be scheduled when time allows.
Music Vibes 🎧
“Thee Sacred Souls: Tiny Desk Concert” - Incredible vibe. Incredible vocals.
Linky Links 🔗
“In The Studio: Neo Rauch” - Recently came across Neo Rauch. His paintings have incredible scale and details.
“Shepard Fairey: Raise the Level” - I recall Shepard’s work being the biggest thing when I started college, way before the famous presidential poster.
