👋🏾 Hi, welcome to The Offhours Weekly, a share of illustrations, drawings, thoughts and links. Thanks for being here, you’re amazing, tell a friend.
Feeling It
More throw back illustrations here from daily drawing project. These are some standouts from when I leaned into lettering. The “OOPS” piece was inspired by Edward Ruscha’s “OOF”. I saw it at the MoMa and it stuck with me, like a lot of his other works. I immediately thought, what other phrase could I give life to, that would give a similar reaction? Something clearcut that can connect with people and conjure up a reaction.
Lettering for me has always been engrained in my practice—even before I started sharing it. I grew up with hand painted and screen printed Jamaican Dancehall Posters all around me. I would create my own posters, and draw letters all the time growing up. For a while I forgot how big an influence these were on the work I do now.
Lettering for me captures a thought in a short affective creative burst. My love for music, song lyrics, reading and what inspires me always finds a way in.
FYI - Taking some time for paternity leave 😊. Wrote a few posts featuring work from my Daily Drawing project. Future posts will be scheduled when time allows.
Music Vibes 🎧
“Till Dawn” - Christian Rich - Two of my favorite producers, signing one of their upbeat percussion driven productions.
Linky Links 🔗
“Louise Bonnet in Studio” - Love to see artists in their element working. Here Louise starts on a freshly primed canvas.
“Where ART Thou” - A Connecticut PBS show featuring local artists across the state. I had studio envy watching the segment on Pamela Sztybel.
Stay Wonderful.
