👋🏾 Hi, welcome to The Offhours Weekly, a share of illustrations, drawings, thoughts and links. Thanks for being here, you’re amazing, tell a friend.
Culmination
These are the last set of iPad drawings I started pre-pandemic, and finished during toward the end of 2020. I love these so much, they capture so much energy. I was attracted to these unique angles when I visited and drove by these spaces. There are structures and spaces that live rent free in my brain—just because they stand out amongst the landscape, or I just happen to look up and see them differently on a particular day. I also can’t pass on vintage signage. The designer in me won’t allow that.
I took the original photos myself, except for the Siesta image that I had to use google street view to capture, as the best angle was from a major super busy road. I wasn’t sure what to do with them until I started drawing and capturing them in Procreate to reinterpret them.
Their not photo realistic, but are reminiscent of Robert Cottingham’s work, which I realized after the exercise. There’s a little Ed Ruscha in there as well. All in all, good company to be amongst. Not my usual style—at least its not reflective of any other work I’ve shared, but I enjoyed this exercise and would recommend you taking photos of unique spaces/places and re-interpreting them too. Draw it, trace it, change the colors etc. Try to capture the energy and experience you felt.
